Relatedly, during squats or lunges, if your knees consistently collapse inward (what we call knee valgus), it's a strong alarm bell signaling that your glutes, particularly the medius and minimus, aren't effectively stabilizing your hips and preventing that inward collapse. This puts immense strain on your knee ligaments and cartilage.
Beyond gait and movement patterns, lower back pain that persists despite core work and stretching is a massive clue, as we discussed earlier. If your glutes aren't extending your hips, your lower back will compensate, leading to chronic tension and pain in the lumbar spine. Similarly, persistent hamstring strains or a feeling of tight hamstrings might also point to weak glutes. If the gluteus maximus isn't effectively extending the hip, the hamstrings are forced to overwork, making them prone to tightness and injury. The same goes for hip flexor tightness – often, tight hip flexors are a body's compensation for weak hip extensors (glutes) that aren't pulling the pelvis back into neutral.
Another, more subtle sign can be an inability to truly "feel" your glutes during exercises that are supposed to target them. If you’re doing glute bridges or squats and primarily feel your quads or hamstrings working overtime, it’s a sign that your glutes aren't activating efficiently.
